XXXII: An Interview with Jimmy

We recently had an exciting visit from our friend Jenny Schnieders and there is much to update as our busy summer continues. However, work has been taking too much of my time lately, so we have to put some of that on hold. Instead, today, I bring you the first of three special installments of the Update. I'm excited about this series, and I think you will be too. Before we begin, squint your eyes tightly, and picture the set of the talk show "Hour Magazine" starring Gary Collins (a favorite at 1032 Illinois Drive in Rantoul, Illinois, circa 1981) or maybe the Merv Griffin Show, complete with shag carpet.....

Me (your host): "It gives me great pleasure to introduce our next guest to the show, he is 7, going on 8, and he has been a very busy guy this summer. Please welcome, Jimmy Watson"
Jimmy: "It's great to be here Dad"

Me: "Jimmy, let's get started. You just finished 1st grade, tell us a little about that"

Jimmy: "Well it was kinda hard but it there was a lot of work. And um it was very fun, we did field trips, field day, field day was where we went to a field at a park and we did relay races, water balloon tosses, tug of war, no we didn’t do tug of war, ate lunch, and then went back to school. In school, I learned how to read, phonics, grammar, math, art which was my favorite, gym. Oh we had music too. My friend Leia she got her tonsils taken out and when she was a little kid her big sisters had to watch her but their dad, one of them is Susette, and their dad was in the shower and then Leia, because they weren't watching her, went out the garage and rode her bicycle and didn’t have a diaper on. Matt Bopp, Chris Rose, Leon, Tommy Quinn, Alyssa Romano, Thomas Sullivan were the other ones I played with. That’s about it about school."

Me: "What do you have going on this summer?"

Jimmy: "Camp, basketball, oh I won the hustle award and got a Nets wristband. Golf camp, gardening camp, rugby, swimming at the pool, playing outside, playing with GI Joes, that's it. We had a water gun fight Sunday when Mom was gone, put that in there."

Me: "That sounds like plenty. Tell me more about rugby."

Jimmy: "You throw the ball behind you and next to you, don't throw it like a football, throw it underhand with your fingers pointed to the ball. You do scrum when the middle person has to kick it behind them to a teammate. You score, you have to touch the ball to the ground across the line in the try zone. My team is 6-1 and I've scored 9 tries. We won a game 45-25 last week and won a game 35-0."

(editor's note, if there was a sport where the scoring involved algorithms and derivatives, 2nd grade boys would know calculus)

Me: "Seen any good movies lately?"

Jimmy: "Yes! Cars! It's about a racecar that at the beginning is racing other cars to win the Piston Cup and he ties with two other cars so they have to go to another state to win the Cup and no one is allowed to race except those three. The car Lightning, his name is Lightning, he gets stuck, his trailer falls asleep and the trailer door opens and Lightning and he goes out and the cop is chasing him and he doesn’t know where Mack is and Lightning thinks the sheriff is shooting at him but he's really breaking down and then he goes to a dump and he has to race Doc Hudson to try to get back to the Piston Cup race. You should see it."

Me: "You are the oldest of three, with two younger sisters? What's that like?"

Jimmy: "Fun! I get to boss my sisters around. They listen to me. Um, they drive me crazy."

Me: "Let's finish with some quick questions. Everyone out there wants to know, what is your favorite meal?"

Jimmy: "sloppy joe's"

Me: "How about your favorite TV show?

Jimmy: "power rangers"

Me: "What is your favorite thing to do outside?"

Jimmy: "play basketball"

Me: "what do your sisters do that drives you the craziest?"

Jimmy: "play in my room!"

Me: "what do you get tired of Mom and Dad telling you to do?"

Jimmy: "make my bed"

Me: "if you had to pick a place to visit for our next field trip, where would it be?

Jimmy: "Mount Vernon"

Me: "if you had to guess a date that your sister Ann will make her first trip to the ER, what would it be?"

Jimmy: "her next birthday"

Me: "Until next time"
